Sydney was buzzing with energy as martial artists gathered for an electrifying three-day Ryukyu Shimbukan Kobudo seminar led by the highly respected Dell Hamby Kyoshi. This intensive event was an incredible opportunity to refine technique, enhance power, and uncover the deeper intricacies of traditional Okinawan weaponry.

Precision, Power, and the Art of Kobudo

From the first strike to the last stance, Dell Hamby Sensei’s sharp eye for detail left no technique unchecked. His expertise in generating power through precision and correct form pushed every participant to new levels. Whether it was mastering the bo (staff), sai, nunchaku, or eku, every session was filled with invaluable insights that deepened our understanding of Ryukyu Kobudo Shimbukan.

Each kata and drill reinforced the efficiency of Okinawan weapons, originally developed by the Ryukyu Kingdom’s warriors to transform farming tools into lethal self-defence weapons. The bo staff, for instance, was once a simple walking stick but became a formidable tool in combat, while the sai—often mistaken for a mere defensive weapon—was proven to be an effective tool for both offence and trapping techniques.

What Participants Had to Say

Jenny Z: “Thank you to Sensei Jess and Chris for your constant help, teaching, and wisdom, and a huge thanks to Sensei Dell for the intensive training over the weekend!”

Chris R: “So much to learn and tighten up the finer details!”
