The 51st JKF Goju Kai All Japan Karate-Do Championships held in Sendai, Japan, were nothing short of electrifying! Competitors from across the globe came together to test their skills, spirit, and dedication on one of the biggest stages in traditional Goju Ryu Karate.

Australia once again showed its strength, determination, and unity, bringing that unmistakable Aussie team spirit to the tatami. Representing both Karate Academy Sydney (KAS) – our home dojo – and the JKF Goju Kai Australia (JKFGA), our athletes put on phenomenal performances that made us all proud.

Outstanding Results from KAS & JKFGA Members
Chris Vetrisano Sensei and Alex Vetrisano Sensei delivered outstanding performances, placing in the Top 8 – an incredible achievement at this elite international level. Their hard work, discipline, and perseverance shone through every round.

Sabrina Vetrisano Sensei impressed the judges and audience alike, winning her first round in kata. Her performance highlighted both technical precision and strong spirit, showing just how far dedication and consistency can take you.

Strong Coaching & Support
A special mention goes to Sensei Jess, who coached proudly matside, offering not only tactical guidance but also emotional support to our competitors. Her leadership and experience were invaluable in bringing out the best in our team and in supporting the broader Australian squad.

Congratulations to All Competitors
Every single competitor who stepped onto the tatami in Sendai gave their absolute best, embodying the true spirit of karate – respect, perseverance, and courage. We are proud of the way our Australian team represented both JKF Goju Kai Australia and Karate Academy Sydney on the international stage.

This championship was more than just about results; it was about growth, experience, and the chance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s best in traditional Goju Ryu Karate.

In 2013, Chris embraced new challenges by joining Seiwakai under Glenn Stephenson Shihan, advancing through inter-club tournaments and gaining valuable competitive experience. His progression through the Dan ranks was guided by Jessica Vetrisano Sensei, whose mentorship has been pivotal in shaping him into the accomplished karateka he is today.

He has competed at the highest levels, qualifying for the JKF (Japanese Karate Federation) World Tournament held in Osaka (2023), Okinawa (2024), and placing top 8 in Sendai (2025)—marks of his elite skill and relentless pursuit of excellence.

In addition to Goju Ryu Karate, Chris has immersed himself in Ryukyu Shimbukan Kobudo under the mentorship of Hiroshi Akamine Kaicho and Dell Hamby Kyoshi, enriching his understanding of traditional Okinawan martial arts.
